Many who join UBSSC only ever come along to our socials; there's nothing wrong with that! But we are, really and honestly, a sports club, and as such we take part in competitions and run race training evenings for those who are keen to help us form a great race team. The most common events are the Kings dry-slope competitions, in which we compete against other Southern Universities in a team slalom on the dry-slope at Brentwood. To train up our teams we also run Tuesday evening training sessions; for around a tenner you get 2 hours on the slope, the chance to practise slaloms, training from professional instructors as well as equipment hire (so you don't bash up your brand new board or ski's on the dry-slope, although some feel they want to...) To race or train (or go on holiday) with us you need to purchase a Sports Federation Membership Card from any Sport Brighton reception- this offers you insurance and compensation should you be injured (as well as paying for exam resits if you can't take an exam due to said injuries!) RACE TRAINING happens most Tuesday evenings in the Autumn term, and will continue right up until BUSC during the Easter break. If you want to train with us you need to be a competent skier or boarder (we don't care if you're not an expert, so long as you have a good team spirit). You'll need to book your place on the sessions by contacting Leonard, our race captain, and you'll need to turn up on Tuesday evenings, outside the Cockcroft building in Brighton (Eastbourne racers, contact Leonard for transport options too...) If you don't book in advance, you can certainly turn up at the last minute and try to blag a place on the bus! Leonard's phone number is 07707 685557, or the less eager can email him; lbobcek@yahoo.co.uk If you're based in Eastbourne, you can also contact Courtney; courtney.taylor22@yahoo.co.uk, or phone her on 07846 148755 as she'll be arranging Eastbourne transport to race sessions. We meet at the Cockcroft buildingat around 5pm and drive in a minibus to the slope. Depending on spaces in the minibus we can sometimes take people for practice, but priority is given to those who actually race, or who are keen on actually racing, in the dry-slope competitions. You'll need gloves, long-sleeved trousers and tops (waterproof too if the weather's not fine), a helmet if you have one, any knee/elbow protection you want to wear. If you have ski/boarding boots, we'd recommend you bring them along if you can. A snack is often welcome too; at the slope they have vending machines and pot-noodles, but it's not the best dinner in the world! We split the cost of the petrol amongst those on the bus, and the club subsidises the cost of training sessions so that it comes in pretty cheap for 2+ hours on the slope.
